Ron Fellows named Grand Marshal of Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion

As the summer goes on, one of the most anticipated weeks of the whole year for automakers, car enthusiasts, sponsors and Monterey businesses grows closer.

WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca has gotten fans even more excited by naming Ron Fellows, one of the most successful drivers in North America, Grand Marshal of the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion. Not only does Ron have a special edition Corvette named after him, but he has 27 wins, three American Le Mans Series championships, two 24 Hours of Le Mans wins and thanks to ALMS fans, spent four consecutive years as the “Most Popular Driver.” In addition, Ron was inducted into the Corvette Hall of Fame in 2011, the Canadian Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2012 and in 2020 was called to the Order of Canada.

Ron had this to say about being named and the event itself, “I’m excited to make it back out to WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of Corvette. This will be my fourth time visiting the historic races and it’s never a bad trip to be on the spectacular Monterey Peninsula.” As part of his weekend duties, Ron will be handing out the Awards on Saturday, including the famed John Fitch Award and the coveted Spirit of Monterey. “I’m honored at the opportunity to be named Grand Marshal and will cross my fingers I have an opportunity to get behind a wheel of one of the cars on track.”

Celebrations kick off with the 14th annual Monterey Race Car Show, held downtown on Friday, August 11th. Thirty non street legal race cars will leave WeatherTech Raceway with a CHP escort to not only enjoy the car show with family and fans alike, but kick off the Monterey Pre-Reunion, August 11th and 12th and Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, August 16th – 19th.

The Race Car Show and Monterey Pre-Reunion are preludes to the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, which was named last year’s Motorsport Event of the Year by the internationally acclaimed Historic Motoring Awards. Visitors will experience some of the world’s best authentic and historic race cars in 14 different groups at speed. This year there is a special observance of Corvette and it’s 70th Anniversary.

To ensure fans will be able to experience all eras of motorsports, each of the 14 race groups will have daily 25 minute sessions. In between those sessions will be special exhibition laps where vehicles will be making their North American or world debuts and more. You can check out the full schedule for more information.

Wrapping up the week and to present a different form of racing on Sunday, August 20th, is the Corkscrew Hillclimb and Community Day. Back for its second year, racers compete against the clock, and their own talents, by launching from the Start/Finish line reverse course toward Turn 11 and up through the Rainey Curve and cresting the Corkscrew as they take the checkered flag. It’s a delight for both fans and racers.

There are very limited Legends Club VIP tickets available for Aug. 18 and 19 in the Pavilion overlooking the racing action below. Included is breakfast and lunch service by local favorites Baja Cantina and Turn 12.

For tickets to all events, you can visit WeatherTechRaceway.com or call 831-242-8200.
